Swimming Pool Safety Tips for keeping kids safe around pools
(from the American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • Never leave your children alone in or near the swimming pool or out of your eyesight, even if only for a moment.
  • You should definitely put up a swimming pool safety fence to separate your house from the swimming pool. Most young children who drown in swimming pools wander out of the house and accidentally fall into the swimming pool. It is highly recommend to place a swimming pool safety fence at a minimum of at least 4 feet high around your entire swimming pool. This swimming pool safety fence will completely separate the swimming pool from the house and play area of the yard. It is also recommended to use swimming pool safety gates that are self-closing and self-latching, with latches higher than your childrens' reach.
  • A power safety cover that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) adds to the protection of your children but should not be used in place of the fence between your house and the pool. ACCORDING TO THE United States Consumer Product Safety Commission THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF THAT POOL COVERS PREVENT CHILDREN FROM DROWNING .
  • Keep rescue equipment (such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver) and a telephone by the pool.
  • Do not let your child use air-filled "swimming aids" as they are not a substitute for approved life vests and may be dangerous.
  • Anyone watching young children around a pool must know CPR and be able to rescue a child or adult even should anything ever happen. Always stay within an arm's length of your child.
  • All toys should be removed from the swimming pool after use. Toys, in the swimming pool will always be a temptation to children. When children are done swimming in the pool, lock the swimming pool safety gate so they can't get back in to the swimming pool area.
Remember, teaching your child how to swim DOES NOT MEAN your child is safe in water.

Use common sense and swimming pool safety fencing to save your kids.

If you have kids in the home and a swimming pool in the backyard, supervision is the No. 1 way to keep your children safe from injury or drowning. Supervision itself is not enough to ensure swimming pool safety. There has been many tragic occasions when an adult will get easily distracted for moments under the false sense of security that a child is protected because he or she is nearby.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, of all the swimming pool accidents involving small children, 77% of the victims had been seen by a parent/guardian within the past five minutes. Almost 80% of swimming pool accidents occurred when both parents were at home and watching the child! Watching your child alone is not enough!

Experts at the National Spa & Pool Institute, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Academy of Pediatrics agree that swimming pool safety barriers are always necessary.  The swimming pool safety fence should be a minimum of 4 feet high with a self-closing, self-latching swimming pool safety gate. All Guardian swimming pool safety fence systems meet these standards.

Swimming Pool Safety Checklist

Below is a swimming pool safety guide for parents of children under 5.  Common sense is the key to all of these swimming pool safety recommendations.

Doors leading to the swimming pool should be kept locked and alarmed if possible.
Install a swimming pool safety barrier around the entire swimming pool, so that the only reason to go through that swimming pool safety barrier is to use the pool. This is a must-do for families with small children. If this isn't possible, make sure your swimming pool safety barrier prevents access from ALL doors, gates and windows, and paths leading into the swimming pool area.
You must never forget that children will try to get around your swimming pool safety system. If you don't think this so, YOU ARE WRONG!
The reasons for this behavior is easy to understand:
1. A child does not know right from wrong.
2. All children are attracted to the water/pool.
3. A child does not know or understand fear.
4. You can't trust a child's judgement.

If a child can't be found, immediately check the swimming pool first. Time is critical!
When having a party, designate a child watcher for swimming pool safety. Adults become preoccupied when socializing and often assume someone else is watching the kids.
Never consider youngsters "water safe" because they've had swimming lessons. There are no water-safe children.
No one should ever swim alone. Teach your children to use the buddy system. Since children learn by example, parents should follow these pool safety tips too.
Learn CPR. Anyone responsible for children, such as babysitters, should know CPR. Because of the time it takes for paramedics to arrive, your CPR skills can make a difference in someone's life.
Radios, CD players and ALL other electrical equipment should be kept away from the pool area.
Toys and games should not be stored or left near the pool. The lure of toys near the pool is much too inviting for children.
Keep a phone and rescue equipment handy in the pool area. Make sure they work.
No drugs or alcohol when you plan to use the pool.
Never dive into the shallow end.
Stay out of the pool during thunder and lightning storms.

Please supervise your children at all times and put in a Guardian swimming pool safety fence around your pool.
