Tips for saving lives around pools
(from the American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • You can save lives by ever leave your children alone in or around the pool, not even for just a moment.
  • You can save lives by putting up a fence to separate your house from the pool. Most young children who drown in pools are because they run out of the house and accidentally fall into the swimming pool. You should install a fence at least 4 ft high all around your entire pool. This safety pool fence will separate the swimming pool from the house and rest of the yard. Use safety pool gates that are self-closing and self-latching, and of course with high latches out of your children's reach.
  • A power safety cover that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) will also save lives by adding to your children's protection but shouldn't be used in place of a pool safety fence between your house and the pool. ACCORDING TO THE United States Consumer Product Safety Commission THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF THAT POOL COVERS SAVES LIVES AND PREVENTS CHILDREN FROM DROWNING .
  • Keep rescue equipment (such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver) and a telephone by the swimming pool to save lives.
  • Air-filled "swimming aids" are not a substitute for approved life vests - don't let your child use them.
  • Anyone supervising young children around a swimming pool should know  CPR and be able to rescue a child in the event of an emergency.
  • All toys should be removed from the swimming pool safety area after use. Play toys in the pool will always be a temptation to children. If children are done with swimming, lock the safety pool gate so the pool area is locked.
Remember, just because your child knows how to swim DOESN'T MEAN your child is safe in water.

Common sense and safety pool fencing will SAVE LIVES.

With kids in the home and a swimming pool in the backyard, supervision is the No. 1 way to save lives and keep your children safe from water accidents. Supervision by itself however, is still not enough to ensure children's pool safety.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has stated that of all swimming pool accidents involving small children, about 77% of the pool victims had been seen by a parent/guardian or adult within the past five minutes. Nearly 80% of all swimming pool accidents have occurred when both parents were present and watching the child!

Experts from the National Spa & Pool Institute, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Academy of Pediatrics all agree that pool safety barriers are vital. The fence should be a minimum height of 4 feet high with a self-closing pool fence, self-latching safety pool gate. All Guardian live-saving pool safety fence systems are built to meet these standards.

Pool safety checklist

Here is a guide for parents of all children.  Common sense is the key to saving lives and ensuring swimming pool safety at all times.

Doors to the swimming pool areas must always be locked and secured and triggered by alarm if possible.
Install a pool safety fence around the whole swimming pool. Parents with small children must do this.
Always assume that children will always try to get around your pool safety fence. Never underestimate children!
The reasons for this are very easy to understand:
1. Children do not know right from wrong.
2. Children are attracted to the swimming pool.
3. Children do not know or understand fear.
4. Children's judgement are not fully developed.
Always check the swimming pool if a child goes missing.
Always designate a child watcher or lifeguard for pool safety during parties. Adults are always too busy and will often assume someone else is watching the kids.
Never consider children "water safe" because they know how to swim. Children are never safe in the water.
Children should never be allowed to swim alone. Your children should always use the buddy system. Parents should follow these pool safety tips too since children learn by example.
Anyone watching children should know CPR. Paramedics to can't arrive right away; CPR skills mean the difference between life and death.
ALL electrical equipment should be placed away from the swimming pool area.
Toys should always be removed from the pool - you do not want children to come after the toys.
Always keep rescue equipment near the pool and make sure they are operational.
Never use alcohol or drugs when you to use the swimming pool.
Never dive into the shallow end.
Stay away from the pool during thunder and lightning storms.

Please watch your children at all times -- and install a Guardian live-saving removable safety fence around your pool.
