Tips for keeping kids safe around pools
(from the American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • Don't leave children alone near the pool, even if there is a safety barrier.
  • Install a pool safety barrier separating your house from the swimming pool. Most young children who drown in pools wander out of the house and fall into the pool. Install a fence at least 4 feet high surrounding your entire pool. This safety barrier should separate the pool from the house and other areas of the yard. Use safety barriers that are self-closing and self-latching, and built with latches higher than your children's reach.
  • A power safety cover that meets the standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) adds to the protection of your children but should not be used in place of a safety barrier between your house and the pool. ACCORDING TO THE United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF THAT SAFETY POOL COVERS WILL PREVENT CHILDREN FROM DROWNING .
  • Always have rescue equipment (shepherd's hook or life preserver) and a telephone nearby the swimming pool.
  • Do not depend on air-filled "swimming aids" to save your child's life as they are not real life vests.
  • People in charge of children around a pool must know CPR and be able to resuscitate a child when necessary.
  • All toys must be removed from the pool after use. Toys tempt children. When your children are done swimming, lock the pool safety barrier so they can't get back in to the pool area.
Remember, a child that knows how to swim DOES NOT MEAN your child is always safe in water.

Use common sense -- and pool safety barriers -- to protect kids

If you have kids and a swimming pool in your home, supervision is the number one way to keep your children safe from water injury or drowning. Supervision itself still is not enough to guarantee pool safety.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, in all the swimming pool accidents involving small children, 77% of the water victims had been seen by a parent or guardian within the past five minutes. Almost 80% of all swimming pool accidents happened when both parents were at home and supposedly watching the child!

Experts at the National Spa & Pool Institute, the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the American Academy of Pediatrics have all agreed that pool safety barriers will always be necessary.  The pool safety barrier should have a minimum height 4 feet high with a self-closing, self-latching pool safety gate. All Guardian pool safety barrier systems are made to these standards.

Pool safety checklist

Here is a quick guide for parents of children, especially ones under 5.  Common sense is the key to all of these pool safety guidelines.

Pathways leading to the pool should be secure, locked and alarmed at all times if possible.
Install a pool safety barrier around the entire pool, so that the only reason to go through the pool safety barrier is to use the pool. This is a must for families with small children. If this isn't feasible, make sure your safety barrier prevents access from ALL doors, gates and windows leading into the swimming pool area.
You must always assume that a child will try to beat your pool safety barrier.
The reasons for this are very simple to understand:
1. A child doesn't know right from wrong.
2. All children are attracted to the water and swimming pools.
3. A child does not know or understand fear.
4. A child's judgement cannot be trusted.
Always check the pool first when a child cannot be found!
Always designate a "lifeguard" for children's pool safety.
Always buy high quality swimming pool safety barriers.
Never assume youngsters "water safe" because they already had swimming lessons. Children are never water-safe.
No one should ever be allowed to swim alone. Teach your children to use the buddy system and lead by example.
Get trained in CPR. Everyone should know CPR especially if they supervise children. It could be a while before paramedics arrive, in the meanwhile your CPR skills can save someone's life.
ALL electrical equipment like radios or CD players should be kept away from the swimming pool.
Children are attracted to toys and games so keep them away from the swimming pool and the pool safety barrier itself.
Always have a telephone and rescue equipment ready in the pool area and in working condition.
Don't use drugs or alcohol before using the pool.
Don't dive in the shallow end.
Stay away from the pool during thunder storms and lightning storms.

Always supervise your children -- and install a Guardian pool safety barrier around your swimming pool.
