Pathways leading to the pool should be secure, locked and
alarmed at all times if possible. |
 |
Install a pool safety barrier around the entire pool, so
that the only reason to go through the pool safety barrier is to
use the pool. This is a must for families with small children. If this
isn't feasible, make sure your safety barrier prevents access
from ALL doors, gates and windows leading into the swimming pool area.
|
You must always assume that
a child will try to beat your pool safety barrier.
The reasons for this are very simple to understand:
|
1. A child doesn't know
right from wrong.
2. All children are attracted to the water and swimming pools.
3. A child does not know or understand fear.
4. A child's judgement cannot be trusted. |
 |
Always check the pool first when a
child cannot be found! |
 |
Always designate a "lifeguard" for
children's pool safety. |
 |
Always buy high quality
swimming pool safety barriers. |
 |
Never assume
youngsters "water safe" because they already had swimming lessons.
Children are never water-safe. |
 |
No one should ever be allowed to swim alone. Teach your
children to use the buddy system and lead by example.
|
 |
Get trained in
CPR. Everyone
should know CPR especially if they supervise children. It could
be a while before paramedics arrive, in
the meanwhile your CPR skills can save someone's life.
|
 |
ALL electrical equipment like radios or CD players should be
kept away from the swimming pool. |
 |
Children are attracted to toys and games
so keep them away from the swimming pool and the pool safety
barrier itself.
|
 |
Always have
a telephone and rescue equipment ready in the pool area and in
working condition. |
 |
Don't use
drugs or alcohol before using the pool.
|
 |
Don't
dive in the shallow end. |
 |
Stay
away from the pool during thunder storms and lightning storms.
