Tips for safe pool play for kids.
(from the American Academy of Pediatrics)
  • Never leave kids alone in the pool, even if it's a safe pool play environment.
  • Always promote a safe pool environment.
  • Put up a safe pool fence between your swimming pool and the house. Install a fence at least 4 feet high surrounding your entire pool for safety. This safe pool fence must completely divide the pool from the house and play area of the yard. Use safe pool gates that are self-closing and self-latching, with latches too high for children to reach.
  • Having a power safety cover does not mean you have a safe pool and must not be used in place of the safe pool fence between your house and the swimming pool. ACCORDING TO THE United States Consumer Product Safety Commission THERE IS NO SCIENTIFIC PROOF THAT POOL COVERS PREVENT CHILDREN FROM DROWNING.
  • Create a safe pool environment by keeping rescue equipment such as a shepherd's hook or life preserver and also a telephone by the pool.
  • Do not let your child use air-filled "swimming aids" as they are not a substitute for approved life vests and may be dangerous.
  • Anyone watching young children around a pool should learn CPR and be able to rescue a child, if needed. Stay within an arm's length of your child.
  • Safe pool environments should have all toys removed from the pool area after use. Toys by the pool are a dangerous temptation to children. After your children are done swimming, lock the safe pool gate so the swimming pool area is secured.
Remember, just because your child can swim DOES NOT MEAN your child is safe in the pool or pool-safe.

A safe pool with protective pool fencing combined with common sense will protect kids.

Safe Pool Usage Checklist

Here is a guide for parents of children under 5.  Common sense is the key to all these safe pool recommendations.

Doors leading to the swimming pool area should be kept locked and triggered by alarm if possible.
Install a safe pool barrier around the entire swimming pool, so that the only reason to go through that barrier is to use the pool. This is a must-do for families with small children. If this isn't possible, make sure your safe pool barrier prevents access from ALL doors, gates and windows leading into the pool area.
You should always assume that a child will try to beat your safe pool system.
The reasons for this are simple to understand:
1. A child does not know right from wrong.
2. All children are attracted to the water/pool.
3. A child does not know or understand fear.
4. You can't trust a child's judgement.
(If possible, print a copy of these list and post by your safe pool area as a reminder for pool safety.)
In the event of a missing child, check the pool right away even if you have a safe pool barrier.
Always designate a child watcher for safe pool play during parties and events. Adults standing nearby are not enough because they might be preoccupied when socializing and often assume someone else is watching the kids.
Never consider youngsters "water safe" because they've had swimming lessons. There are no water-safe children and there are no safe pools.
No one should ever swim alone. Teach your children to use the buddy system. Since children learn by example, parents should follow these pool safety tips too.
Learn CPR. Anyone responsible for children, such as babysitters, should know CPR. Because of the time it takes for paramedics to arrive, your CPR skills can make a difference in someone's life.
Radios, CD players and ALL other electrical equipment should be kept away from the pool area.
Toys and games should not be stored or left near the pool. The lure of toys near the pool is much too inviting for children.
Keep a phone and rescue equipment handy in the pool area. Make sure they work.
No drugs or alcohol when you plan to use the pool.
Never dive into the shallow end.
Stay out of the pool during thunder and lightning storms.

Always your children under supervision -- and install a Guardian safe pool fence around your swimming pool.
